A friend picked up his Model Y in Izmir last spring and spent the first week convinced something was wrong with the audio. Bass felt thin, vocals sounded distant, and Spotify kept cutting out for a second every time he changed tracks. Nothing was broken. He'd left the EQ on the factory default, was streaming over a weak Bluetooth connection instead of the built-in app, and had never touched the sound profile settings buried two menus deep. Twenty minutes of adjustment later, it sounded like a different car.
That gap between what Tesla's hardware can actually do and what most owners hear every day is bigger than people expect. This post walks through what's actually different between trims, how streaming source changes sound quality, and which settings are worth your time.
Standard vs Premium: the real speaker count
Tesla's audio hardware has changed more than once across the Model 3 and Model Y lineup, and that's the biggest source of confusion when owners compare notes online. Early Model 3 base trims (2018 to 2020) shipped with a modest 7-speaker setup and no subwoofer. Cars with the Premium interior package got a noticeably better system: 14 speakers, a subwoofer, and two amplifiers.
Since the 2021 refresh, Tesla folded the better hardware into every Model 3 and Model Y trim. Current cars ship with what Tesla calls Premium Audio across the board: 15 speakers including one subwoofer, driven by two amplifiers. So if you're comparing a 2019 Standard Range to a 2023 car, you're not imagining the difference. It's real, and it's significant.
Model S and Model X sit in a different tier entirely. Since the 2021 interior redesign, both ship with a 22-speaker, 960-watt system Tesla markets as "Ultra High-Fidelity Sound." It includes active road noise reduction, which uses the car's own microphones to detect road and wind noise and adjust output to compensate in real time.

If you're shopping used and audio quality matters to you, the model year tells you more than the trim badge does. A 2020 Standard Range Plus and a 2022 Model 3 can sound like two completely different cars even with similar mileage and condition.
Spotify, TIDAL, and why they don't sound the same
Tesla built two streaming services directly into the car's software: Spotify and TIDAL. They are not interchangeable in terms of audio quality, and most owners never realize why.
Spotify streams at a compressed bitrate, generally around 320 kbps for Premium accounts, which is solid for casual listening but noticeably softer on transients and cymbal detail than a lossless source. TIDAL, added to Tesla's software in a 2021 over-the-air update we covered in our recap of major Tesla software releases, offers a HiFi tier with lossless FLAC-quality streaming, and a Master tier with MQA-encoded hi-res tracks on supported songs.
The difference is audible on Tesla's Premium Audio hardware, especially on well-mastered tracks with wide dynamic range. It's less obvious on quieter cabin listening at low volume, and it disappears almost entirely if you're streaming over Bluetooth instead of using the built-in apps, which brings up the next problem.
Bluetooth is the weak link
Streaming from your phone over Bluetooth caps out at whatever codec your phone and the car negotiate, typically SBC or AAC depending on device. Both are lossy compression formats, and neither comes close to what the built-in TIDAL app can deliver over the car's direct internet connection. If you've paid for a TIDAL or Spotify HiFi-tier subscription and you're still connecting your phone over Bluetooth out of habit, you're leaving most of that quality on the table.
The fix is simple: use the car's native streaming apps instead of casting from your phone. It also frees up your phone's Bluetooth connection for calls and notifications without competing for bandwidth with audio.
EQ settings that actually help
Tesla's sound system includes a fairly capable EQ under Controls, then Toolbox, then Audio, with a graphic equalizer and presets. Most owners never open it. A few adjustments make a real difference.
- Turn off "EQ: Enhanced Bass" if vocals sound muddy. It's tuned for punch, not clarity, and on tracks with dense midrange it can wash out vocals.
- Set Fader and Balance to center, then adjust from there. Factory default sometimes leans slightly toward the driver seat, which throws off stereo imaging for rear passengers.
- Use the "Standard" sound profile as your baseline, then A/B test "Enhanced Bass" and "Enhanced Treble" against it on a song you know well, rather than switching blindly.
- Cabin Overheat Protection and climate fan speed affect what you hear, especially at highway speed. A fan on high can mask a surprising amount of low-end detail, so if you're critically listening, drop the fan and let cabin overheat protection handle temperature instead.
- Test EQ changes at your normal driving volume, not parked in a silent garage. Road and wind noise change how bass and treble balance sound in motion.
Cabin acoustics: why the same system sounds different in different Teslas
Speaker count and wattage only tell part of the story. Cabin shape and materials matter just as much. Model 3 and Model Y have a more reflective interior than Model S, thanks to more exposed glass (especially with the panoramic roof) and less sound-deadening material than the flagship sedan. That reflectivity can make treble feel slightly harsher in a Model Y compared to a Model S running the same recording.
Aftermarket floor mats, seat covers, and sound-deadening kits change this more than people expect. A friend's Model 3 in Bodrum picked up a noticeably tighter, less boomy low end after adding door-panel sound deadening, purely from reduced rattle and resonance, not from any change to the speakers themselves.
Active noise reduction: what it actually does
The road noise reduction feature on Model S and Model X, and now rolling out via software to newer Model 3/Y builds with the updated hardware, works differently from noise-cancelling headphones. Rather than generating an inverse waveform to cancel outside noise directly at your ear, it uses the car's cabin microphones to detect ambient road and wind noise, then adjusts the audio system's output level and EQ curve to compensate, so the music you're playing stays clear and consistent as speed and road surface change.
It's a genuinely useful feature on rough asphalt or at highway speed, where fixed-EQ systems in older cars tend to lose clarity to wind and tire noise. It is not full active noise cancellation for the cabin as a whole. Road and wind noise still reach your ears normally; the system is compensating the music, not silencing the outside world.
Testing it for real: Bluetooth vs TIDAL HiFi
We ran a side-by-side test in a 2023 Model Y Long Range with Premium Audio, parked in a quiet garage in Antalya to remove road noise from the comparison. Same song, same volume level, switched back and forth between a phone streaming Spotify Premium over Bluetooth and the car's built-in TIDAL app set to HiFi.
The difference was obvious within the first ten seconds, even to a passenger who claimed not to care about audio quality. Bluetooth streaming had a noticeably flatter top end and less separation between instruments, especially on a track with layered strings and vocals. TIDAL HiFi through the native app sounded more open, with clearer detail in the higher frequencies that Bluetooth compression tends to smear together.
We repeated the same comparison at highway speed on the way back from the test, and the gap narrowed but didn't disappear. Road and wind noise mask a lot of the finer detail once you're moving, but the Bluetooth version still sounded noticeably more congested in busy passages. If you only listen at low volume around town, you may not notice much difference. If you drive with the volume up on the highway and care about how music actually sounds, switching off Bluetooth is worth the five seconds it takes.
Phone calls and voice commands
The sound system angle usually focuses on music, but the same hardware handles phone calls and the car's voice assistant, and quality here varies more than owners expect. Call audio routes through the cabin microphone array, the same one used for road noise reduction on newer builds, and callers on the other end generally report clear audio as long as you're not driving with windows down or the fan on high.
Voice commands are more sensitive to cabin noise than phone calls are, since the system needs to isolate a shorter, more precise phrase rather than a continuous conversation. If "Hey Tesla" commands are getting missed more often than they used to, check whether Cabin Overheat Protection or a loud HVAC fan setting is running, since that's a more common cause than a hardware problem.
Replacement and aftermarket speakers
Swapping Tesla's factory speakers for aftermarket units is possible but rare, and for good reason. The factory amplifiers are tuned specifically for the stock speaker impedance and frequency response, and Tesla's software EQ presets assume stock hardware. Installers who've done full speaker swaps report it's a multi-day job requiring extensive interior disassembly, and the resulting sound often needs custom EQ tuning to avoid sounding worse than stock, not better.
A more common and lower-risk upgrade is adding a standalone subwoofer in the frunk or trunk area, wired into the factory system, which owners on forums report as a meaningfully cheaper way to add low-end punch without touching the door speakers at all. If you're considering any aftermarket audio work, factor in that it can complicate warranty claims related to the infotainment or audio system, so it's worth checking with an independent shop that specializes in Tesla-specific work rather than a generic car audio installer.

Switch off Bluetooth streaming, spend five minutes in the EQ menu, and actually compare TIDAL HiFi against whatever you've been using.
