I watched a woman in a Trader Joe's parking lot in Antalya last August stand at the window of her Model Y for a full minute, phone in hand, staring at the little "Pet inside, temperature is fine" message on the exterior screen. Her dog was asleep on the back seat. The AC was running. She still checked the app three more times before she walked into the store. That instinct, not trusting a feature you can't see working, is the right one to start with, because Dog Mode is genuinely good but it is not magic, and it fails in specific, predictable ways.
This post covers what Dog Mode and Camp Mode actually do under the hood, where each one breaks, what it costs you in battery per hour, and which one you should actually be using depending on the situation.
How Dog Mode actually works
Dog Mode is a climate setting, not a separate piece of hardware. When you enable it from the Climate menu, the car keeps the cabin at whatever temperature you set, usually somewhere between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 degrees Celsius), and switches the exterior touchscreen to a large display that says something like "My owner will be back soon. The A/C is on and it's 71°F inside." Anyone walking past your car sees that message instead of a black screen, which matters more than it sounds like, because it's the single thing stopping a well-meaning stranger from calling the police or smashing a window.
What the exterior screen actually shows
The display updates the interior temperature roughly every few minutes and stays on the whole time Dog Mode is active. It also shows a fan icon so people can see the system is actively running, not just idling. This part works reliably as long as the car has power and the screen hasn't gone to sleep from being parked too long before you started Dog Mode.
The battery threshold that matters most
Here's the part most owners never check until it's too late. Dog Mode has a low battery cutoff, and if your charge drops below that threshold, typically around 20 percent depending on software version, the car will stop climate control to preserve enough charge for the 12V system and basic functions. You get a push notification when this happens, but only if your phone has signal and the car has cell connectivity at that exact moment. If you left for a four hour hike starting at 35 percent battery on a 95°F day, you could come back to a car that silently shut off cooling an hour before you returned.
Where Dog Mode fails
None of these are Tesla being careless. They're mostly physics and connectivity limits that any climate system parked outside for hours will run into.
- Cellular dead zones. Underground parking garages, rural trailheads, and some parking structures block LTE signal entirely. If the car can't reach Tesla's servers, it can still run Dog Mode locally, but you won't get alerts if something goes wrong, and you can't check cabin temperature remotely. This is the single most common reason owners report a "silent" Dog Mode failure that turns out to have been running fine the whole time, they just had no way to confirm it.
- Battery drops below threshold mid-trip. Covered above. Start with more margin than you think you need, especially in extreme heat where the compressor works harder and drains faster.
- 12V battery degradation. Dog Mode depends on a healthy 12V system to keep auxiliary electronics running even while the main pack handles climate. An aging 12V battery, the same one covered in our 12V failure guide, can cause Dog Mode to behave erratically or fail to re-engage after a software wake cycle.
- Someone opens a door. Dog Mode disengages if a door, trunk, or frunk is opened, which is intentional (it assumes you're back), but it also means a curious kid tugging on a door handle, or a valet who doesn't know better, can accidentally kill climate control without you knowing until you check the app.
- Software updates mid-session. If an over-the-air update installs while Dog Mode is active, climate control pauses for the reboot. This is rare but it happens, and it's one more reason not to treat Dog Mode as unattended-proof for anything beyond a quick errand.
Setting it up so it actually works
A few small habits catch most of the failure modes above before they become a problem.
- Charge to at least 70 percent before you leave the car. This gives you real margin above the low battery cutoff, especially in heat, and it means a delayed return doesn't turn into an emergency.
- Confirm you have signal before you walk away. Check the LTE bars in the car's status bar, not just your own phone's signal, since the car uses its own modem and connection.
- Turn on push notifications for the Tesla app specifically. Some owners have notifications muted globally on their phone and never realize Dog Mode alerts are being silently swallowed until the one time it matters.
- Park in shade whenever you have the option. Direct sun on the glass roof and windows forces the compressor to work much harder to hold the same cabin temperature, which both increases battery draw and increases the chance you hit the cutoff early.
- Set a phone reminder for your own return time, not just a hopeful estimate. Owners consistently underestimate how long errands take, and that gap is exactly where battery cutoffs happen.
Camp Mode: when it's the better choice
Camp Mode is built for people, not pets, and the difference matters more than it first appears. It keeps interior climate running the same way Dog Mode does, but it also keeps the 12V outlets, USB ports, interior lighting, and sound system powered, and it does not show the pet-friendly exterior message. It's meant for you to be inside the car, sleeping or hanging out, not for you to be somewhere else checking on a display.

If you're using a Tesla for an actual camping trip, sleeping in the back with the seats folded down, Camp Mode is the right tool. Dog Mode will technically keep you warm too, but it's built around the assumption that a person will walk up and check the screen, not that you're the one lying in the trunk area at 2am wondering why the fan cycled off.
Battery cost per hour
This is the number people actually want and rarely get a straight answer to. Draw rate depends heavily on the temperature difference between outside and your target cabin temperature, since the compressor and heater both work harder the bigger that gap is. Rough numbers from owner-reported data and our own testing, similar in spirit to the draw curves we measured for Sentry Mode power use:

On a Model Y Long Range with roughly a 75 kWh pack, three hours of Dog Mode on a 100°F day could realistically cost you 10 percent of your battery, sometimes more if the car is parked in direct sun instead of shade. That's a meaningful chunk if you started the day already low, and it's exactly the scenario where the low battery cutoff kicks in without warning if you weren't watching.
Cold weather draws less per hour than extreme heat in most cases, but heat pump equipped vehicles handle this more efficiently than older resistive heater models. Testing it for real: a night in Cappadocia
We ran Camp Mode overnight in Cappadocia in early June, ambient temperature dropping to about 55°F (13°C) by 3am, cabin set to 68°F. Starting battery was 62 percent. By 7am, after roughly eight hours, battery had dropped to 44 percent, an 18 percent loss overnight. That's higher than the daytime hourly averages above would suggest, mostly because of two extra draws: interior lighting used on and off through the night, and a phone charging continuously via USB.
The exterior screen stayed dark the whole time, as expected for Camp Mode, so nobody walking by had any indication two people were sleeping inside. That's a feature for privacy but worth knowing if you're camping somewhere you'd rather look occupied, since an unlit Tesla at a trailhead at night looks abandoned, not occupied.
We ran the same test again in late June with the ambient temperature staying above 75°F (24°C) overnight instead, cabin set to 70°F this time. Starting battery was 58 percent, ending at 45 percent after seven hours, a 13 percent loss. Warmer nights actually cost less than the cooler one, mostly because the heater in the first test had to work against a bigger gap between outside and target temperature than the AC did in the second. That matches the general pattern in the draw table above: the size of the temperature gap matters more than whether the system is heating or cooling.
One more thing worth flagging from both tests: neither run showed any noticeable difference in 12V battery behavior, but we were working with a 12V battery less than a year old in both cases. Owners with an aging 12V battery, especially anything past the three to four year mark, should expect less predictable results overnight, since Camp Mode leans on that battery more continuously than a short daytime Dog Mode session does.
Which mode should you actually trust

The honest takeaway is that both modes work well for what they're built for, but "well" still means checking your starting battery percentage, knowing whether you'll have signal where you're parking, and not assuming a silent phone means everything is fine. A quiet app is not the same thing as a working system, it might just mean the car couldn't reach you to tell you otherwise.
